Battery Manufacturing

  • Graphene is recognized as a ‘wonder material’ . It is a potent conductor
of electrical and thermal energy, extremely lightweight chemically inert, and flexible with a large surface area.
  • A graphene battery can be light, durable and suitable for high capacity energy storage, as well as shorten charging times
  • Li-ion batteries (and other types of rechargeable batteries) can be enhanced by introducing graphene to the battery’s anode and
capitalizing on the material’s conductivity and large surface area traits to achieve morphological optimization and performance.

Infrastructure Facilities

  • ndia Innovation Centre Graphene (IICG), is being setup with an outlay of Rs. 94.85 Crore at Makers village, Kochi by Govt. of Kerala, MeitY-GoI, Digital University of Kerala, Industry Partner – Tata Steel. with the objective to fill the gap between R&D and commercialization by providing a complete facility to startup and industry.
  • Govt. of Kerala is also setting up Graphene Production Park (pilot production facility for
Graphene), under PPP, with an outlay of Rs. 237 Crore. Kerala Digital University and KINFRA are the implementation partners for the project.

Investment Avenues/Opportunity

  • Unit for integrating Graphene in commercially available battery technologies to improve their performance
  • Graphene supercapacitors could provide massive amounts of power
while using much less energy than conventional devices. Because they
are light, they could also reduce the weight of cars or planes.
  • Graphene based materials, with versatile and tunable properties, can be creatively utilised for biomedical applications.

Status of the project

Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary
launched the ‘Graphene-Aurora program’ at a function in Maker Village Kochi on 14th Aug, 2023

Policy support

  • Graphene has been identified as one of the 22 key priorirty sectors under Kerala Industrial Policy 2023, and industry units in Graphene sector are eligible to avail
    incentives under the Industrial Policy.
  • The State shall come up with a separate Graphene Policy for promotion of Graphene based R&D, innovation, manufacturing and policy administration

Nodal Department

  • Digital University of Kerala – Nodal Agency
  • KINFRA - designated SPV for infrastructure development of Graphene Park.
